Yoga Journey • South India
A gentle introduction to India’s vibrant culture.
Travel with us to Kochi, Idukki/Munnar, Madurai, Theni, Varkala, and the Backwaters!
Kochi
The journey first takes us to the coast near Kochi Airport.
Here we can rest after the flight, enjoy our first South Indian meal, and shop for Indian clothing for the onward journey into the mountains.
Idukki/Munnar
In the gentle mountain region of Idukki/Munnar, we let ourselves be enchanted.
Loud birdsong, colorful butterflies, and lush green vegetation as far as the eye can see.
We marvel at tea plantations, coffee plants, cardamom, pepper, and other fascinating wonders of nature. Visits to a chocolate factory and a tea factory are also planned.
Madurai
From Kerala, we take a detour to Tamil Nadu and stay overnight in Madurai, one of the oldest cities in South India, to receive blessings for our onward journey at the famous Meenakshi Temple.
We stay in a stylish hotel with a pool and enjoy the culinary offerings that leave nothing to be desired.
Theni
After that, we head to an ashram – a monastery-like meditation center.
Here, rituals take place throughout the day, which we can participate in. I will give you an introduction, and we will practice yoga together. The ashram grounds are beautiful, and the place is peaceful – perfect for reflection and recharging your energy.
Varkala
We will experience a three-day Ayurveda program in an upscale setting, including two treatments per day and delicious Ayurvedic meals. This not only provides deep physical cleansing but also brings peace and clarity to the mind.
The program includes morning yoga classes offered by the resort. From here, we will visit the over 2,000-year-old Janardaswamy Temple and, after the treatments, explore the surrounding area of the coastal town of Varkala.
We will stay in a beautiful hotel with a pool, with plenty of opportunities for shopping. Varkala offers many massage options, and the sea provides the opportunity to surf. Yoga sessions here will most likely be with Kuutoo, a yogi who practices Kalarippayattu, leads yoga teacher trainings, and has many inspiring stories to share.
Upon request, an appointment with a well-known astrologer can also be arranged.
Backwaters and Fort Kochi
The journey concludes with one night on a houseboat in the Backwaters and two nights in Fort Kochi.
In Kochi, we will attend two special events: Kathakali and Kalarippayattu. Kathakali is one of the oldest dance forms – a spectacular fusion of drama, dance, music, and ritual. Kalarippayattu is an ancient Indian martial art from Kerala.
Kochi will amaze us once again with its history! The coastal society of Kerala was once matriarchally governed, later occupied by various colonial powers, and is now under communist rule.
